GORAKHPUR: In a key decision to tackle unemployment by equipping youths with skills and work experience, UP chief minister Yogi Adityanath on Sunday announced an internship programme under which students from Class 10 to graduation will get to work with technical institutes and industries for six months to one year and will be paid a stipend of Rs 2,500 per month during the period.
The Centre will contribute Rs 1,500 of the honorarium while the state will provide Rs 1,000, Yogi said after inaugurating the Rozgar Mela (employment fair) at Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Gorakhpur University.
“The internship scheme will be launched this year. Under this scheme, students from Class 10 to graduation will be linked to various technical institutes and industries. On completion of their internship, the government will assist them in placement through an HR cell, which will be set up soon,” he said.
The scheme is in sharp contrast to the unemployment allowance of the previous Samajwadi Party government, wherein jobless youths, aged between 25 and 40 years, having annual family income less than Rs 36,000, were given a monthly allowance of Rs 1,000.
Yogi said the government has also decided to ensure compulsory recruitment of at least 20% girls in state police. The CM claimed UP was the first state in the country which was successful in giving government jobs to more than 2.5 lakh youths within three years. The investment of more than Rs 2.5 lakh crore through Investors’ Summit also created employment opportunities for 35 lakh youths, he said.
“Through the department of labour and employment exchange, we have done three times more work in just three years than previous governments in five years,” he added.
The state government will be opening an ITI and a skill development centre in each tehsil to equip youths with skills to increase employability, the CM said.
“Our government has ended interviews for non-gazetted posts of class IV, III and II in the state to curb corruption and ensure transparency in recruitment,” Yogi added.
The CM said Defence Expo 2020 in Lucknow was a huge success and it will open the doors for creation of jobs in the state. “Defence chiefs and ambassadors of 70 countries attended the Expo. Many national and international companies signed MoUs for putting in money in the defence corridor, which will bring an investment of Rs 50,000 crore and employment for 5 lakh youths,” he said.
