NEW DELHI: Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Thursday said the entire country except the Modi government has heard the cries of lakhs of migrant workers who have been forced to walk hundreds of kilometres to return home, leading the party charge in the online protest “Speak Up India” to press the demand for cash transfers to the poor. She urged the government to “unlock the coffers” and provide relief to corona crisis-hit Indians.
Sonia’s charge that the Centre was oblivious to the plight of migrants and small businesses came in a video message shared on Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and Instagram between. The campaign — involving Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, CMs and district functionaries — saw videos with demand that a monthly
sum of Rs 7500 be given to poor families for six months and that days of work under MGNREGA be increased to 200 days. “Around 57.30 lakh workers participated and uploaded videos. # SpeakUpIndia was the top trend in the country from 10am to 5pm and also on top worldwide. Our messages reached 10 crore people while total numbers who saw the message would be 3-4 times more,” spokesman Ajay Maken and AICC social media head Rohan Gupta said.
Noting that crores of livelihoods have been lostand farmers are running around desperately to sell their produce, Sonia said, “The entire country endured this pain but probably the government is oblivious to it.”
